Synthetic and Natural Fiber Brooms in Sweeping

We've got all kinds of gadgets that have tried to replace our brooms, but the truth is that every home still needs a broom. A broom is a great tool for a quick pick up or an intense floor cleaning. Find out how to make your sweeping more effective and efficient.

1.      Choose a Broom
Find a broom that fits with your floor type. Smoother floors can get by with synthetic brooms. Rougher floors may need natural fibre brooms to be as effective. Choose a broom with sharp edges for cleaning under cabinets and in tight spaces. Make sure your broom is at a comfortable height, and not too heavy to manage.
   Synthetic Brooms
                 Natural Fibre Brooms

2.      Find a Starting Place
When sweeping a room, there are a couple of different methods. Some people like to walk the perimeter of a room, sweeping from the edges into a pile in the centre. Others like to begin at one end of the room and move to the other pulling the dirt pile along with them, or eliminating the pile in sections. Choose a method and starting point that works for you.
3.      Start Sweeping
Sweeping isn't a difficult motion to master, but try to keep continuous contact with the floor, without pressing the broom strands down into the floor.
4.      Sweep Up Your Dirt Pile
Sweep dirt into a pile. Sweep the dirt pile into a dust pan and then deposit it in the trash. Be careful not to dump the dirt too quickly, causing dust and dirt to billow back into your face, or onto your clean floor.
5.      Preserve your Broom
Put away all of your supplies and be sure to clean your broom if needed. Hang your broom to prevent the bristles from becoming bent or damaged, or sit the broom upside down for storage.
  • Avoid getting your broom wet. It damages the broom and shortens its life span.
  • When washing a broom, make sure that it dries thoroughly upside down, to prevent bristles from being bent or damaged.

Living Room Flooring Considerations, Tiles, Carpets and Rugs

The living room is an inherently social space, a place that is on display for guests and friends, but also acts as a gathering area for all members of the household. It is where people come together to talk, share, and connect with one another based around shared interests and amicable interactions. Since the floor is such a large and important part of the room’s ambiance, there are certain factors that you have to consider when choosing a material.

Since its main purpose is social in nature, you want the flooring in your living room to evoke a sense of comfort, easy maintenance and the cost factor

Also, when choosing living room flooring it is important to remember that the style of the material is going to influence the décor of the entire room.

Colour: The power of colour to influence the human subconscious has been well documented by psychologists. With living room flooring, it is important to choose colours that create a sense of comfort.

Texture: The way your flooring feels is going to be an important part of the ambiance of the entire space. Traditionally living room flooring has tended to be soft with materials such as carpet, rugs. In modern designs many living rooms will feature hard surface materials such as concrete, tiles.

Cleaning and Maintenance: Caring for flooring in the living room is going to be a constant concern. Aside from regular maintenance required to keep the flooring intact, you will also have to deal with occasional spills and stains. The more use the living room gets the more this is going to be a concern. In CONSIDERATION, hard surface materials are going to be easier to maintain and more resistant to stains.

Durability: The level of traffic in your living room is going to determine to some extent the life cycle of your floor. Many hard materials such as concrete and tiles can last for years if properly cared for. However softer materials such as carpeting and rugs may need to be replaced every few years.

Have a splendid week

Your Toothbrush and You.

I thought to share this topic with you today.

As you reach for your toothbrush each morning, you may not realize what’s hanging out on its bristles.
“Toothbrushes can become contaminated with oral microbial organisms whenever they are placed in the mouth,”
Viruses and bacteria from an infected person’s mouth can live for weeks on a toothbrush surface, and continue to cause illness,
Even normal, healthy micro-organisms can cause infections, especially if they enter your gum tissue due to an injury, a break, or an oral ulcer.
Toothbrushes don’t have to be sold in sterile packaging, so they may have bacteria right out of the box.
Keeping it Clean
You may not give much thought to cleaning your toothbrush, since you’re wetting it every day to scrub your teeth. However, it’s important -- and easy -- to do.
Wash it. Give your toothbrush a thorough rinse with tap water to remove debris. If you have a systemic illness or immune disorder, you may want to soak it in antibacterial mouthwash.
Try deep cleaning. There are many types of toothbrush sanitizers on the market.
Store it properly. After use, don’t pop that wet toothbrush back into your bathroom cup and forget about it.
Store it upright, in a rack or cup, but not somewhere it can’t dry out. Look for a cover that lets air and prevents mold, but isn’t completely sealed. The lack of air can foster bacteria.
How long should you keep a toothbrush? Here are a few useful tips:
Know when to let go. Replace your toothbrush about every three to four months, or when it shows signs of wear. “Frayed bristles will not clean the teeth and gums adequately,”
Toss toothbrushes after illness. Throw away a brush you or anyone in your home used while they were sick.

Cleaning your Sweater

Clean sweaters before storage, because moths, and carpet beetles feed off sweat and stains.
Dry cleaning works well but can get pricey. In most cases, it’s safe to hand wash wool, but let the care label be your guide.
Add your detergent in a sizeable rubber.
Turn the garment inside out; submerge, move with rushing sound, then soak for 10 minutes.
Rinse twice, pressing out the water. Never hang-dry, since wet wool stretches easily.
Dry Flat

Lay the garment on a clean towel and roll it up to extract water. Unfurl and let dry on a new towel or a mesh rack.

                                                           A Mesh Rack.

No Shoe Policy Saves Time, Money and Health

More and more people seem to be adopting a “no shoes policy” in their homes.  Professional housekeepers will tell you the advantages are clear:

  1. Carpeting stays clean and lasts far longer.
  2. Less wear and tear on wood flooring means a substantially longer life-span and less frequent washing.

An advantage you may not have thought of:

    3. Possibly improved health if you live in an area with high levels of pollen, dust or other allergy triggers, because you won’t track all those allergens into your home.

A few cautions:

Going barefoot in the house is not the answer. Always wear slippers or socks. The reason? Dust and dirt mixed with the oils on your feet can lead to carpet stains and premature wear.

Don’t just heap a pile of shoes near the door. Looks bad and smells bad!

Don’t “require” your guests to remove their shoes unless you provide them with some kind of slippers. Who knows but what they have a hole in their sock or worse.

So save money and cleaning time, keep carpeting and wood floors looking new longer, reduce allergens in your house all by simply taking off your shoes!

I think this would help the Nigerian 'strong men' who likes to walk out of their houses barefooted to keep clean and healthy.

Daily, Weekly and Monthly Cleaning Schedule

Hello Good Morning!

I took out time to post a 'cleaning schedule' that will guide you daily, weekly and monthly in your home cleaning.

You could save it on your computer or paste at home. If you are the busy type, still take out time to adhere to it as this will save you the bulk of cleaning to be done when you will have your free time.

5 Benefits of Ceiling Fan

While the sale of air-conditioners continues to grow, many home owners overlook ceiling fans despite the fact that they can make a room feel four to five degrees cooler!

Here are some other great benefits of ceiling fans:

- They can complement air-conditioners and help them run more efficiently which is better for the environment, and significantly reduces electricity bills.

- Ceiling fans are also helpful if installed above dining tables or kitchens because they dissuade flying pests from entering the room.

- Ceiling fans also have a number of benefits over floor standing or smaller desk-style fans. Ceiling fans become part of the room’s décor, save space and are safer particularly for children and pets.

- Today’s ceiling fans are more efficient, with improvements in motors, controls, blade design and reduced weight making them a feature of a room instead of an eyesore.

A recent innovation in ceiling fans is the latest version Typhoon fan in which moulded plastic blades replace the traditional metal or steel variety. The Typhoon moulded design promotes large amounts of airflow with minimal noise, and is safe to use in areas where inadvertent contact with fans blades may occur.

Don't abominate using a ceiling fan...

Methylated Spirits Cleaning.

Methylated spirits is a raw alcohol and menthol. The menthol gives it a strong smell and taste, so it isn't mistaken for water.

Aside the use of Methylated spirits to disinfect living tissues you can also use it to do some home cleaning.

It is a great solvent for paints, so it removes ink, felt pen marks etc and is also a great all-purpose cleaner.

To clean windows, mixing it 50/50 with water and spraying the solution on windows. Wipe the solution off using a clean towels – rubbing vertically for outside and horizontally for the interior panes. Don’t use newspaper

Methylated spirits is also great for cleaning white boards, even if you've used a permanent marker on the board, just dampen the surface and wipe it over the board, then use paper towel to polish it off.

Keeping your Teeth Healthy and Removing Plaques

Do you know people who have plaques on their teeth? Share this article with them as it will benefit them and you inclusive, because you don't want to talk to someone who's mouth repels you.

Err, if you are a victim of Plaque and mouth odour you will practise these tips.

Before

After

1) Brush for a full two minutes, twice a day - Brush gently for a full two minutes twice a day using a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. There are good toothbrushes out there, you could also use a power toothbrush with a rotating-oscillating action as it can greatly assist in removing plaque and food debris. So it’s something to think about if you’re currently a manual brush user.

2) Floss every day - The old adage that you only floss the teeth you want to keep holds true.  Dental plaque can cause cavities if it’s left between teeth. When mixed with sugar, the bacteria that live in plaque can start the process of tooth decay; this is why it’s bad to leave plaque in your mouth. In addition to brushing, flossing daily can help the removal of plaque and bacteria between the teeth that can cause bad breath.
3) Drink more water; limit the intake of acidic drinks - Water is great for your teeth! Limit acidic drinks like soft drinks, sports drinks and fruit juices. These are not only high in sugar but contain acids that soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, causing holes or erosion. Drinking more water reduces the acid that causes tooth decay and helps keep the mouth clean. Opt for tap water vs. bottled for the added benefit of fluoride.

Happy Week Ahead!

Clean Less: The Healthiest Resolution You Can Make

In our homes we often care less about the health implication which comes with cleaning. We can create a better environment suitable for our health while we keep our houses clean.

Some tips that can be helpful are outlines below:

Dust Protection
Dust mite are a very small creature that lives in the dust in your house and that can cause an allergic reaction. Try covering your mattresses and pillows with dust resistant encasing. This will help minimise the amount of dust mite allergen.

Removing Mould

Molds are fungus that can sometimes post health hazard to humans, potentially causing allergic reactions and respiratory problems. They are common component of household and workplace dust. If you are sensitive to strong odours, wear a mask or get someone else to perform this task for you.

Sprays are breathable.
You could opt for wipes and sponges rather than sprays, which spread chemicals throughout the air. Simply keep your house ventilated as a recourse.

Disinfectants can irritate airways.
It’s just that overzealous cleaning can actually worsen your breathing. Researches made has found that cleaning products that contain disinfectants release chemicals that increase asthma risk -- or aggravate the condition if you already have it.

Washing
Hot wash your bedding – washes above 55°C will kill dust mites. Or if you wash in cold water use a product containing essential oils.

I hope I have been helpful.

Happy Weekend!

How to Clean your TV and Hi-Fi Equipments

Prevent dust getting into your audio-visual equipment's delicate parts.
Every day: TV screens are a magnet to dust - give a quick clean as often as you can with a microfibre cloth. Wiping with a softer sheet will reduce the static charge, too.
Every week: Get the dust out from the ventilation grilles of TVs, PCs, hi-fis etc. Give the casings a wipe with a just-damp cloth and never with chemical cleaners.

Remote controls can be a Cosy home for bacteria so give them a regular clean, too. A firm wipe with a damp cloth should do the job, or if a crust is starting to form you'll need to get in between the buttons with a cotton bud and a mild solution of soapy liquid.

To clean your FLAT SCREEN TV, Put a slight soapy liquid in a clean spray bottle and shake well, then spray screen and wipe immediately across the screen with a dry microfibre cloth. By that all streaks/stains will be off.

Great tips. Thank me later.

6 Simple Strategy to Better Manage your Money

Smart money management is about more than understanding the math. That part is simple: Spend less than you earn, and invest early.
The numbers aren't difficult, but the psychological and emotional hurdles that prevent most people from achieving their financial dreams are.

There are no secrets. The basics of wealth building have been well-documented for centuries. Stop searching for short-cuts and secrets; it’s said not to spend more money than you make.
Happiness comes from managing expectations. You won't find contentment by working harder to buy more stuff, because there's always more stuff to be had. Escaping the trap is simple: Learn to be satisfied with what you have.
You can have anything you want but not everything you want. Cut expenses ruthlessly on the things that don't matter so you can spend lavishly on the things that do.

Automate everything. When it comes to saving and investing, you are your own worst enemy. So remove yourself from the equation. Automate your savings, keep that money where you can’t easily deep into, do simple stuffs like what the Yorubas call ‘ajor’ or HAVE ASSETS (What brings in more money.
Perfect is the enemy of good enough. Too often we fail to act because we're searching for the absolute, sure way to invest or save. We do nothing instead. But action cures fear, and a decent or simply good outcome is always better than nothing.
Don't make excuses. Don't blame the president, the government, your ex or your company for your financial situation. Your circumstances might not be entirely your fault, but they are your responsibility.

Nobody cares more about your money than you do, so don't wait for someone else to tell you how to save or invest or get out of debt. You have the guts and the brains to run your own business.

How to Clean a Painted Wall

Sticky fingermarks are probably not a good look after the agony over paint charts. The gist is they are usually straightforward to remove.
Wipe small spots on the paint with a damp cloth as soon as you discover them.
Larger areas of wall can be washed down, but make sure you swipe the wall (Using a dry microfibre cloth) to remove dust that will mix with the water and smear all over the wall otherwise. Use a weak detergent or a solution washing-up liquid and warm water and a sponge or cloth.
Dry off with paper towels as you go.

Heavier staining can be tackled with a solution of washing soda, but test in an inconspicuous area first.
If all else fails, you can always paint over the offending mark. Lol

How to Clean your Fridge

Cleaning your fridge weekly is equivalent to taking your bath daily. Yes, I said so.

Every Week: Remove fridge shelves and compartments and wash them in warm soapy water, then rinse. Wipe the inside of the fridge with a potion made up of two teaspoons of detergent for every litre of warm water. Get into the rubber door seal with an old toothbrush and don't forget the outside of the door and the handle - germs will have a ball here if left unchecked.

Stains inside the fridge can be rubbed with soap or white toothpaste.

I hope these tips have been helpful.

How to Clean your Freezer

You know it's time to start a freezer-cleaning routine when you need an ice pick or a knife to get your peas or food material. Ahahaha

When ice starts to build up, defrost the fridge or fridge freezer. Transfer the cargo to cool bags then stick a bowl of hot water inside to help the thaw (Frozen Substance). Once the ice is melted, clean out the appliance as above and restock generously.

A couple of times a year pull the appliance away from the wall and gentle clean the cooling elements at the back. It will make the freezer more efficient, so you have more money to spend on filling it up.

N.B: Check manufacturer's instructions first if you are unsure as to whether the item you are cleaning is suitable for our instructions.

How to Remove Rust from Fabrics or Metal Bakeware

Destructive to metal, rust can also leave a bad stain on fabrics unless dealt with quickly.

It will amaze you how you can easily remove rust from these materials.

Here you go:

From clothing: Apply a paste of lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda to the rust (test an inconspicuous area first), leave to penetrate for a couple of hours, then wash as usual.

From metal bakeware: Sprinkle powdered detergent on the rust and rub with half a raw potato (yes, really).

From iron and steel: This is can be achieved by rubbing down with sandpaper.

So easy. What do you think?

How to Remove Glue from Materials

Most often, glue stick where you don’t want it and creates mess.

Here are simple tips that will help you remove them:

  • Start by sponging the area with warm soapy water to dissolve the glue - you may have to repeat this process several times.
  • If that doesn't work, rub ice on the glue first to make it hard and brittle then scrape off as much as you can with a blunt knife. Rinse any remaining stain in plenty of cold water.

This will help solve the challenges of glue stains.
